| 16/1/08 SINKING OF THE ICE PRINCESS Danger from drifting timber heading for our shorelines We have received an update from Coastguard and IWC Emergency Planning in relation to the Ice Princess which sank just after midnight last night. The deck cargo of bundles of timber (several 100 tons) has broken loose and is floating in the water. It is expected that these bundles will break up over the next few days which will result in large quantities of individual timbers in the water. No details are currently known of the timber sizes. It is anticipated that these loose timbers will start to wash up on the shoreline over the next few days. With the current weather conditions the wreckage is expected to move in an easterly direction and could arrive on the Western end of the Isle of Wight in 4 to 5 days. This is somewhat quicker than the Napoli incident due to the weather conditions. Please advise surfers that there is an obvious risk of injury from being struck by a large lump of timber and Compton Bay for example, could be in the main 'firing line'. Best regards, IW Police. |
| Secret spot going sick! A decent swell hit the Island on the 6/2/08 with Niton having some good surf during the morning. During the afternoon the west and south side cleaned up loads and a fairly rare breaking low tide spot showed itself! There were 3 of us surfing it which consisted of myself, Nat Mccabe and James Ranson, with photographer Josh Manning enjoying the evening sunshine on the cliff top with a fractured wrist! Does anyone care to guess where this spot is? ;-) |
| Big storm of March the 10th 2008 What a crazy swell! A mixture of Southerly windswell and SW groundswell combined to produce some amazing surf in certain spots, Ryde was one of them! Head high gaping barrels and evil take-offs, perfect for the sponging folk but not so good for the resinous chaps! |

| BEACH DETOX - 26th April, 10 AM, Grange Chine
Rapanui, supported by the Marine Conservation Society and the willing public, aims to rid one of the Isle of Wight 's most polluted beaches of its chemical burden. It is more than just a beach clean; we are recording data for all of the waste on the beach for a scientific study by the Marine Conservation Society. The waste will be recycled where possible and the rest used for Energy from waste. For years we have surfed there and it seems like every week more and more crap washes up or is dumped; plastic bottles, bags, nappies, crisp packets and even syringes. It is truly shocking. Tucked away on the island's west coast, the Chine is a convenient victim for people willing to turn a blind eye. That's not the way we roll. With refreshments provided by the Site Owners to entice you, come and clean up a beach, recycle some pollution and meet some likeminded people. 10AM at the campsite entrance/outside reception |
